Generalise this demand
The letter pasted below appears in today's Irish Times and represents a significant widening of the demand that Zion Evrony, Israel's ambassador to Ireland, be given his marching orders until his country stops their grim slaughter in Gaza..
It's over 1000 now. That was Tuesday. Zion Evrony is meeting a Dail EU committe later today to discuss the moves in Europe to strengthen ties between Israel and the EU. He will not be a happy man walking into that meeting. The letter will help with that, as it was intended to - but the big news is that the EU Commission, not exactly a bunch of good guys, are getting a dose of seriously cold feet about the plans for this development of the relationship with Israel. So there won't be much to talk about.
"The decision to suspend implementation comes as a blow to the Israeli foreign minister, Tzipi Livni, a month before she faces the rightwing hawk Benjamin Netanyahu in a general election.
The new European policy was in part designed to help Livni win the election and late last year she had two "tempestuous" meetings with Bernard Kouchner, the French foreign minister, demanding quicker European action to boost her poll chances. EU foreign ministers responded with a decision to push ahead with the policy.
While the practical impact of the freeze may be minimal, officials said, the political and symbolic signals are strong, controversial and unusual.
"It wouldn't surprise me if people like Fererro-Waldner were working not on an upgrade, but on a downgrade," said a third diplomat in Brussels.
The protest move has been orchestrated by the commission which, at a meeting in Strasbourg yesterday, agreed that "people should stay away from Israel", said another source."

Bolivia also has just given their Israeli ambassador his marching orders. Morales referred to the Israeli slaughter in Gaza as a 'genocide'. Venezuala had already done so some days ago.

This type of demand is being heard by the administration in Israel, and by Israeli Diplomats, and it is coming from all over - not just from South America. It is also, through their national newspapers, being heard by the citizens of Israel, and by Palestinians in the West Bank who are still in a position to read newspapers. It is not an 'extremist' demand as some colourful journalist in Harretz said yesterday. It is becoming a popular demand. Are the signatories to the letter below 'extremists'? Are Spanish NGO's extremists? It would be interesting to see a list of these 'extremists'.
With the start of the fighting, the Foreign Ministry instructed its foreign delegations to prepare daily reports on the press that Operation Cast Lead was receiving. In the first days the reports were sparse, in part because of Christmas and New Year's, but then they began to fill up with scores of negative items describing Israel's attacks on innocent people in Gaza. "You see the reports in the morning and you feel ill," said a senior official.
In some of the countries, especially those more critical of Israel, more extreme voices are being heard. Thus, for example, a group of non-governmental organizations called on the Spanish prime minister's party to recall the Spanish ambassador from Tel Aviv to protest Israel's "war crimes."
A senior Israeli diplomat who serves in a delegation on the East Coast of the United States described how he is repeatedly asked in media interviews about Israel's war crimes in Gaza, or about the disproportionate response to the Qassams. "The harm to civilians in Gaza is causing huge damage that will only increase each day the operation continues," the diplomat said.

There are plans in train to generalise this demand much more comprehensively in Ireland beginning as of now. Signatories are still flowing in for this letter and this list only represents a proportion of those who agreed to sign. The Irish Times were anxious to conserve space! This attempt to make this demand something that cannot be ignored is being undertaken by a disparate group of activists, some of whom are united by the fear that the situation in Gaza may escalate in the coming days. If not now when?
The Letter
Madam, – We, the undersigned, are united in seeking the immediate expulsion of the Israeli ambassador to Ireland, Dr Zion Evrony. We believe the ambassador must leave Ireland until such time as there is a complete end to Israel’s war on Gaza and its continued slaughter of the Palestinian people. – Yours, etc,
