In a Gandhi-like protest, a completely unarmed peaceful gathering of peace activists walked to the Bil'in Wall, were tear-gassed and then shot with rubber bullets, were brought to ambulances for treatment and then returned to the non-violent demonstration. Among them was Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Mairead Corrigan Maguire. read full story / add a comment

Mayo farmer Willie Corduff, who was jailed for three months in 2005 over his opposition to Shell's inland gas refinery at Bellanaboy and high-pressure pipeline through his farm, has been awarded the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize. Awarded annually to six grassroots environmental heroes, the $125,000 no-strings-attached prize is the largest of its kind in the world and is often referred to as the Nobel Prize for the environment. read full story / add a comment

“The Burning” – PDF available below – is a full length play written about the circumstances surrounding the destruction Captain Jack White’s papers following his death in Broughshane, Co. Antrim in 1946. White, as many people will know, was one of the more well known figures in Irish history that identified with anarchism. The only son of British Boer War hero, Sir George Stuart White (“The Hero Of Ladysmith”), he was assured a bright future in the upper echelons of the British military until his conscience intervened and he resigned his commission. Breaking with family, he gravitated to political activism and the revolutionary left. His baptism of fire was the Great Lockout in Dublin in 1913, where he worked alongside Larkin and Connolly and proposed the idea of the Irish Citizen Army. Of Protestant “stock”, he was active in the fight against imperialism, reserving particular vitriol for the “Orange” state formed in the north of Ireland after partition in 1922. read full story / add a comment

In advance of the annual USI Congress, Red Wedge previewed proceedings with an article "What is to be done with the Union of Students in Ireland?" In this article, he offers an eyewitness account of the event and some thoughts on the future of the student movement.
It soon becomes clear that McGuirk - a former officer of the Freedom Institute who has been involved with both Ogra Fianna Fail and young Fine Gael, is too progressive for many of the 200 or so delegates who represent student unions from across Ireland. His plea for USI to continue its link with SIPTU and for the annual congress not to axe the deputy president position who co-ordinates campaigns is warmly received by the UCD delegation. No one else in the hall welcomes these words. Maurice Roes contribution is interrupted by regular applause. His final bit of auction politics in his call for support is that he will ensure that a new website will be constructed if he is elected-sets the congress on fire. read full story / add a comment

Erased from the historical record for many years (literally in the case of Elizabeth O'Farrell) the women of the 1916 to 1923 period of Irish history are starting to be recognised once again for the important role they played in the struggle for Irish freedom. Today in Dublin, a local history group organised a commemoration of the brave women who fought alongside the men in the fight against British rule and the establishment of the Free State. The march was led by a colour party of women wearing the uniforms of Cumann na mBán and the Irish Citizens Army. The five area-based Community Development Projects in Limerick City have called for all-party support for John Fitzgerald’s recommendations for improving life for people in the city’s disadvantaged communities. Volunteers and workers from the five Community Development Projects also want the Government – before the Dail dissolves in three weeks or so – to set up the proposed Regeneration Boards on a statutory basis. The two most well known Irish hydrocarbon deposits: the Corrib field and the Dunquin prospect are collectively worth at least E400 billion euros. They contain around 33trillion cubic feet of gas and between 2.5 and 4 billion barrels of oil. The gas in the Corrib belong to Shell, Statoil and Marathon and the Dunquin prospect is totally controlled by Exxon Mobil and Providence . We will end up buying back our oil and gas and they will be charged pitiful tax rates as they can write all exploration and construction costs over the past twenty-five years against tax. On the afternoon of 19th March Cosantori Siochana held a wreath laying ceremony, to mark the fourth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, at Shannon Airport. Deirdre Clancy of the Pit-Stop Ploughshares laid the wreath at the site of the old Customs Post at the Airport. Residents of adjoining streets to Fatima Regeneration Project Phase 2 under the representative body of The Four Terraces Residents Group find themselves pondering on what course of action to take following two more days of late construction operations on 12/3/07 and 13/3/07 in direct conflict with relevent planning conditions which restrict construction works to within the hours of 8am-6pm Mon-Fri and 8am-4.30pm Sat despite site operating under notice from DCC Planning Enforcement for previous breaches of planning conditions.Residents Representatives fear a deal to agree future road closures necassary for construction programme is now unlikely as a consequence of Developers actions and apparent DCC Planning Enforcements inactions. read full story / add a comment

Pro Choice Activists marked International Women's Day by holding a protest outside a Rogue family planning agency on Dorset Street. The Agency called "Womens Resource Agency" and also using the name "British Alternatives Pregnancy Services" was covered up with a brown sheeting - in an attempt to prevent their identity and location being exposed in the media. read full story / add a comment

To date residents and supporters of the Shell To Sea campaign have been staging an ongoing picket outside the Shell gas refinery gates in Ballinaboy. Numbers on average at these chilly weekday morning vigils vary between 40 to 60 people. The picket is a reminder both to the government and the petrochemical multinational that local residents are against the construction of the refinery and the laying of gas pipes in their area. A national day of support was called, inviting people who empathise with this campaign to come up to Mayo on Friday 16th February 2007. This is what one person saw. read full story / add a comment |
