Animal rights colleagues and myself from the Alliance for Animal Rights had teamed up with the Star newspaper when they offered to highlight the pigs plight and we offered to try our utmost to get new homes and locations for the then considered 'inedible' pigs.

The Irish Department of Agriculture have killed all of the 200 pigs that survived the accident last week in Kerry. Apparently they are edible and are being used as food, we were told that 11 were killed for supposedly 'humane ' reasons. They refused to give them to us after they survived the accident, we were prepared to help them to live out their lives as most animals do,when fate gives them a second chance.

Eco -Soc Galway and SPUNOUT were delighted to host inspirational anti -war campaigner Caoimhe Butterly last week.
In a talk entitled 'Peace War and Media' Caoimhe gave a human dimension to recent events in Lebanon. Photos of scenes from the southern Lebanon area where she is currently based showed faces and families directly affected by the Israeli Defence Forces bombing this summer. The recent Sit-in protests in Beirut came dramatically to life from her words and photos.A livley question and answer session chaired by Lelia Doolin brought the talk to its conclusion.

There are two small protests outside Sinn Féin’s special Ard fhéis. One is made up of a small number of men who hold up a poster saying “No Terrorists in government”, they belong to the Love Ulster campaign. The other is made up of Republican Sinn Fein members (mainly young men). They distribute leaflets with the message “True Republicans say: No British police, no British laws, no British courts” and re-iterate their call for Eire Nua and a full British withdrawal from Ireland. read full story / add a comment

Athletes, trainers, mammies and daddies and fans from many parts of the world - notably Africa, Poland, England, Scotland, France and the USA - gathered for a cross-country running meet in St Fechins' GAA grounds in Termonfeckin today. The meeting kicked off at 12.00 noon with underage races. The men's and the women's race took place on either side of 3.00 p.m.

The track was fast and flat and it did not churn up despite the many races which took place on the day.

On the 7th of February of 1986, the Haitian people, after years of revolt against the rich and the powerful in their country, toppled one of the most brutal dictatorships that history has recorded, the one led by the Duvalier family. But not only they did put an end to the US-backed reign of terror of the Duvaliers, but as well, the people were pushing forward a series of popular demands that were meant to radically change the face of Haiti: this was a truly revolutionary struggle. read full story / add a comment

February 1st, St Brigid's Day, marked the day when Shell announced obscene annual profits of 20 Billion Euro, while the communities they fleece pay the ultimate price of environmental destruction and death, all around the world.

Our government pumps for Shell but we're gonna stop them.

St Brigid's Well, Liscannor, Co Clare is a site of annual open-air religious service on that day and Clare Shell to Sea were there to greet the pilgrimage makers.

On Friday night, February 2nd, The Ruaille Buaille World Music Dance Club held a fundraiser for Clare Shell to Sea in Scariff, East Clare. Great night, fine people, music and dance. read full story / add a comment

In light of President Bush’s determination to send an additional 21,000 plus troops to Iraq, regardless of the position of Congress and the American people, the citizens of the United States must be made aware of the ongoing experimentation and outright disregard for our American troops. With nearly thirty-six percent of our Gulf War I troops disabled, we must hold those responsible for such negligence accountable for these atrocities. read full story / add a comment

This evening Shell to Sea activists picketed and protested outside Shell's partner-in-crime, Statoil's (franchised) Service Station in Newcastle Road. As evidenced by the frequent car honking and positive feed back from pedestrians there's still oodles of goodwill and empathy out there for the good people of Rossport and their titanic struggle against corporate thug Shell and their bought shites in government and mainstream media?. read full story / add a comment
