Michael Mc Dowell, being back in the High Court defending the Rights of the Father is awaiting judgement of the Mr 'G' case, in which a father has applied for return of his kids from another jurisdiction (UK) and the right to be a father and to educate his children. Another recent High Court case is being prepared to go to the Supreme Court regarding the rights of a woman to use the eggs she is storing and to have the dad pay for the future life and education of any child conceived as result of the process- the father won citing the end of the marriage and irreconcilable difference. She is appealing. Both cases involve:- Father's Rights to family and both are read for and judged within the confines of the Catholic Constitution drafted by De Valera and of course substanially amended by Archbishop Mc Quaid. The 'G' case should get loads of coverage. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday evening a rippling realisation which may yet become a tidal wave of emotions hit the copy editors of almost all commercial news entities on this continent. Editors of both newspapers and television news programs had to make a very quick decision as to how they would report the naming of Kate Mc Cann as a formal suspect in the case of her daughter's disappearance & then then subsequent naming of her husband. For this has never a run of the mill child abduction case. British commerical media raised an award fund of 2 million pounds sterling whilst the length & breadth of Europe's tourist destinations saw her photo displayed on posters with the phrase "look into my eyes" more often than not written in English. Her case was linked by her parents and the band of loyal followers who charted their unprecedented campaign to one other case of a disappeared child in Spain whilst sighting of the Mc Cann infant were made & investigated from Morrocco to Spain, Malta to Portugal. read full story / add a comment

The Irish Times this Morning 08/09/09 features headlines regarding Eamon Ryan's 'Signal' that the Green Party may be supporting the Referendum on the EU proposed for this country in 2008. The paper's Front page states that Minister Ryan believes that the 'accrued benefits' of EU membership signal a change in attitude by the Greens toward their EU policy. This is media manipulation of the highest order which accomplishes two things:- 1. It assures investors in Corporate Europe that the Greens are 'onside'. 2.It is part of a campaign instigated by Dick Roche TD, who assumes responsibility for both selling the public and manistream media the benefits of EU expansion and corporatism. read full story / add a comment

There is a retrospective of Ann Madden's Major works from the 1950's to Date running at IMMA until September the 30th, I had meant to write about it before. The themes are of voyages and mythos- including the Icarus story which is painted in red and gold, the paintings are ofter based in connected series through the East wing of the gallery or presented in Triptych form on the walls. Its a stunning exhibition, the later paintings are marked with small icons of crosses . the image shown with this little piece is one of a series of Aurora Borealis inspired paintings- and the exhibition is free, as is the Yeats collection at the National Library and of course walking on the Hill of Tara. read full story / add a comment

Last week, Joan Burton, a highly talented finance spokesperson and stalwart of the Labour Party withdrew her candidacy from the running for leadership of the Labour Party (a centrist concern with a pre-election pact with a right wing party). She cited lack of internal party support for her decision and nominated herself for deputy leader. This is a problem, for the preceeding forty eight hours The Irish independent Newspaper had been running the Gilmore story on both front page and editorial columns as The main bet for leadership, There is no other candidate declared. Deputy leader Liz Mc Manus is delaying nomination until later in the week. The profiling of women in irish politics, especially in mainstream parties relegates women to secondary positions, indeed a cursory glance at the papers indicates that politics is indeed a 'Job for the Boys', Tony O Reilly says so and he makes a lot of profit out of it. read full story / add a comment

Increasingly the patient is no longer seen as a passive recipient of medical treatment. Attempts are being made, at least at an ideological level, to involve patients more in the design of medication and to lend some weight to what patients really think of medication and how it is affecting them. Naturally there are life saving chemicals like penicillin, insulin and cytamen (for vitamin B12) but there is a plethora of more optional drugs on the market not least a whole cabinet of neuroleptic drugs. From my own observations as a patient for over 30 years attending clinics and hospitals throughout that period it is unclear whether many of these drugs have an authentic role in (a) preserving life or (b) in improving the quality of life of the patient. read full story / add a comment

The conviction of Michael McKevitt was far from the finest hour of our judicial system. The latest revelations leaves no doubt that he was unfairly tried and convicted through the pages of the print media long before he appeared in Court. Under such circumstances, the media and Mr Mooney in particular must have the moral courage to undo the damage done in this case. read full story / add a comment

I have just heard that the American Humane Association has awarded a "Humane award" to a 900-cow factory farm because they slaughter cows with compassion. Despite the fact that each birthed calf is separated from her mother, they rationalize by calling themselves humane. Despite the fact that each and every one of their cows ends up hanging upside down with her throat cut in a slaughterhouse, they now call themselves humane. Some people might argue that there is such a thing as humane slaughter.I disagree completely. read full story / add a comment

Yet again the Government has shown itself limited by the market push of the EU and the FDA with regard to choice in health care and diet. The FDA and EU had worked on an operating system, which cost millons where the net result is the coloured bar on the end of your ceral box which tells you the RDA of your food. Its the 'buy it bulk and sell it back at profit' school of thought which brought the ban on St John's Wort and the envisaged ban on Tea Tree Oil. In translation it just means that in exchange for the profit of the Multi's we get treated like kids with regard to Choice! Last week we all watched as the titular head of the Irish justice Department actively deported a six year old autistic boy, along with his twin sister and his mother. They were put on a commercial flight to Lagos, late at night and given enough cash for an hotel. In the last day a Mexican woman who had sought refuge for 12 months in a church and had become the voice of economic migrants and illegals in the US was picked up and deported to Tijuana, leaving behind her, her eight year old boy Saul. Elvira Arellano has vowed to continue her fight from the other side of the border. If we look at the newswire the overwhelming amount of these cases have involved women and children. No surprises there, they are slower and easier to catch. read full story / add a comment |
