I have sent the following letter to the various leaders involved with the Peace Process in Northern Ireland. I am asking for an explaination, why the people of Ulster are being forced into allowing known terrorists, to help govern the country that they have tried to destroy for thirty years. éirígí, the newly formed Socialist Republican campaigns group, launched it’s ‘Reclaim the Republic/Athshealbhaígí an Phoblacht’ campaign over the course of last weekend. The campaign aims to bring the message of 1916 to the people and trigger a debate about the nature of modern day Ireland and how it compares to the Ireland envisioned in the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. In attempting to make this a reality, éirígí has begun to distribute thousands of full colour poster-size copies of the Proclamation to the citizens of Dublin on a not for profit basis. Over the course of the weekend éirígí activists distributed hundreds of copies of the Proclamation in various location across the city, including, Tallaght, Crumlin, Walkinstown, Drumcondra, Ballybough and the City Centre. éirígí activists will continue to distribute these posters over the coming weeks and months. Any donations received will be used to cover the cost of printing additional posters for further distribution. In this way éirígí hopes to ensure that the Proclamation will hang with pride in homes, workplaces and schools across the city. read full story / add a comment

Young republicans and Basque ex-pats discussed ETA's recent ceasefire, and the Basque Left-Abertzale's peace initiative. The Captive Animals Protection Society (CAPS) has today called on the Department of Agriculture to impound the animals currently traveling with Circus Vegas, the Courtney owned outfit which has hit the headlines again following an incident last night on the M50. It is believed that the beast wagon carrying the elephants had a blowout as the circus was in transit between Wicklow and Stepaside. This same beast wagon, again carrying the show’s two elephants, was involved in a fatal accident on the Tuam Road in Galway in April when a mother and her daughter were killed when the wagon became detached from the cabin. read full story / add a comment

Ógra Shinn Féin have written to An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern demanding a meeting regarding the issue of suicide prevention. The youth group have also written to minister for health and Children, Mary Harney TD and British Direct rule minister Responsible for health Paul Goggins MP requesting similar meetings. The meetings will be a part of their suicide prevention campaign which was launched at the Ógra Shinn Féin national congress in February. read full story / add a comment

A system of sequenced closing times for licensed premises in Ireland is long overdue and is respected worldwide as a concept, which facilitates the steady and orderly flow of people leaving licensed establishments throughout the night. US Navy’s most senior legal official, Dr Albert Moro, says the US administration is guilty of war crimes over the use of torture at Guantanamo Bay. The current Irish government by extension is also guilty of war-crimes by facilitating CIA ‘rendition programmes’ and refusing to search CIA planes carrying people to torture sites. read full story / add a comment

While most of the world’s media is accusing the Chavez regime of being only one step away from a ‘communist’ dictatorship the real picture of Venezuelan reality is very different. The Chavez government has embarked on a massive programme of social change and wealth redistribution. Venezuela, a country of enormous national wealth, has historically known a very unequal wealth distribution. The Irish Anti War Movement supports the asylum claims of the Afghan hunger strikers in St Patrick’s Cathedral. The desperate measure by the 36 asylum seekers highlights the lies and the myth that the US and its allies are spreading democracy through its ‘war on terror’. The reality is that the US has replaced one group of thugs that it helped to create and fund – the Taliban, with another group that it now funds – the Northern Alliance (NA), to rule Afghanistan. The real agenda behind the US ‘war on terror’ is the extension of US power and dominance in the world. The latest Christian Aid report, ‘The climate of poverty: the facts, fears and hope’, launched to coincide with Christian Aid Week (14-20 May), highlights that climate change is now threatening development goals for billions of the world’s poorest people. The report reveals the stark reality that a staggering 182 million people in sub-Saharan Africa alone could die of disease directly attributable to climate change by the end of the century. Many millions more throughout the world face death and devastation due to climate-induced floods, famine, drought and conflict. The report calls on the Irish government to lead rich countries in taking urgent action to curb global warming.
