Dear Sisters,

It has been an incredible hard time for women in our society. A shocking attack of austerity is impeding women’s lives from every angle; from Lone Parents, Children’s Allowance, Maternity Leave, Household Groceries, Household Utility bills, Property Tax and so on. With the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar, the unfolding of the Magdalene Laundries, with the attack on low paid civil servants, the women who feed the sick and those who keep our hospitals clean. The severe and systematic attack on Community Projects the places where many women invest their spirits and lives for the betterment of their communities.

Hare coursing and foxhunt clubs crave good PR. In recent days they've got the opposite: Mega pop star Paoblo Nutini denounced bloodsports after attending a hunt ball in Westmeath without realising its connection to foxhunting...and then members of the Irish Council Against Blood Sports captured horrific footage of hare maulings at the so-called "Irish Cup" coursing festival at Limerick racecourse. Now one of the most important Irish cultural iniatives of recent decades has effectively disowned the cruel baiting of live animals for "sport"...

The rats have been on South Georgia longer than the British settlers have been on the Malvinas. Why no support from The Daily Mail for them? Full story at link.

An "alien invader" eradication scheme of unprecedented scope will resume on Friday on the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia. Three former air ambulance helicopters will begin dropping 100 million poisonous pellets in a bid to eradicate brown rats from the island. The rats first arrived in the 18th Century as stowaways on sealing ships. read full story / add a comment

Beppo Grillo - leader of M5S movement in Italy
international / politics / elections / other press Wednesday February 27, 2013 22:08 by T   text 9 comments (last - thursday august 22, 2013 21:41)   image 2 images
In the recent elections in Italy the new movement M5S led by the former Italian comedian Beppo Grillo has gained 108 seats in the lower Chamber of Deputies and 54 in the Senate. It is hard to get an accurate picture of who he is and what he wants from the mainstream media since they see him as a challenge to the system and will gladly misrepresent him. In this article it reports on the account given at The Automatic Earth blog where Nicole Foss met Beppo Grillo in Italy and gives her view on him, his movement and what they are trying to achieve.

"The internet is central to Grillo's ideas. Not only as a tool to reach out to people, but even more as a way to conduct direct democracy. Because that is what he seeks to create: a system where people can participate directly. Grillo wants to bring (back) democracy, the real thing, and he's long since understood that the internet is a brilliant tool with which to achieve that goal." read full story / add a comment

On February 23rd and 24th, members of an anti blood sports campaign group attended part of the so-called “Irish Cup” live hare coursing event, which was held on Limerick racecourse and sponsored by multi millionaire businessman JP McManus. They managed, in spite of an official ban on “unauthorised photography” that apples to all hare coursing events, to film some of the action.
