On the 4th of January, 1969 Irish civil rights protesters from People's Democracy which included the Price sisters suffered a brutal attack from around 200 lyalists armed with iron bars, bottles and stones at Burntollet Bridge in a march from Belfast to Derry. It is an important day in history in that for many, in that it was the start of the troubles in Ireland with a number of young women savagely beaten which included the price sisters. Beaten into the river, it was a baptism of fire for the two young teenagers. read full story / add a comment

In the wake of the recent attack on Gaza that left over 160 Palestinians dead, Ireland has assumed the six-month Presidency of the European Union. However the EU continues to reward and cosy up to Israel, even amid that state’s constant violations of the ceasefire terms, repeated violent provocations in the West Bank, and continued illegal settlement construction and colonisation. Therefore, as part of Israeli Apartheid Week 2012, on Thursday 28th February, from 1-2pm the IPSC will be holding a lunchtime vigil outside EU House, Molesworth Street, Dublin 2 to highlight the European Union’s ongoing facilitation of Israel’s apartheid policies and war crimes. read full story / add a comment

Limerick IPSC will be hosting an infomation stall, making consumers aware of the presence of Israeli goods in local shops and explaining the connection between these products and Israel’s occupation of Palestine. Good news from Northern Ireland . AFAR is delighted in The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) stance in updating the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 2011 to ban any dog docked after this date from being shown in Northern Ireland. A new Egyptian opposition group has risen to the forefront, as the country marks the second anniversary of the ousting of former President Hosni Mubarak. The ‘Black Bloc’ is threatening Islamist authorities and sparking fears of a street war. “This mysterious group appeared around the second anniversary of the January 25 revolution when they released a statement saying they would fight the Muslim brotherhood and strive for the goals of the revolution,” Cairo-based journalist Bel Trew told RT. It’s around that time that the group developed a Facebook page, giving advice on street fighting. Cannisters of pepper spray were also waved at locals who were manhandled and handcuffed. The National Lesbian & Gay Federation (NLGF) - in conjunction with Dublin City Council Social Inclusion Unit and The Community Foundation for Ireland - invite you to attend the first national conference to address poverty and social exclusion in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgendered (LGBT) community. The event will explore how issues relating to poverty, economic inequality and multiple disadvantage impact upon LGBT people. "At the onset of the crisis Ireland had one of the lowest debt to GDP ratios in Europe. The government inter-departmental committee setup to establish the facts into State involvement of the Magdalen Laundries was published on Tues 5th Feb in an attempt to deal with the issue for once and for all. What the findings show is that there was significant involvement and the laundries seem to have been used by a variety of state institutions for dealing for young women in terms of the justice system and social services that the state was unable or unwilling to deal with and the interface with reformatories and industrial schools. In the aftermath the government has only offered a partial apology to the victims and they feel this is not good enough read full story / add a comment |
