On Thursday, September 16th, Joe Gilmartin and Seamus O’Nualláin left Tipperary with a van full of aid to drive 5000 km to Gaza. Along with others from the north and the UK, they are part of the international VIva Palestina convoy of almost 200 vehicles, $3million of medical aid, and 400 people from 30 different countries, for the people of Gaza. Having crossed through France, Italy, Greece and Turkey, the latest news is that that the convoy is waiting in Latakia, Syria, to get a ferry to Egypt and then travel into Gaza. The Egyptian government is currently threatening not to allow them through. Here is the diary that Joe and Seamus have sent back. To follow their progress go to facebook page “Tipp2Gaza”. read full story / add a comment

Up to 250 people took part in the 1% Network’s walking tour on Saturday last, October 9th. As people began to gather from as early as 12.30pm it was clear that large numbers were going to to take the opportunity to ‘see how the 1% live.’ The unusually warm weather and low-key Garda presence added to the almost festive atmosphere for this most unusual of political protests. read full story / add a comment

The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) today welcomed the government’s refusal to grant Israel Military Industries the contract to supply 10 million bullets to the Irish Defence Forces. The contract for the 5.56 x 45mm rounds, to be bought over a five-year period, has instead gone to Belgian and Brazilian arms manufacturers. Over the past seven months the IPSC had been running a campaign (http://www.ipsc.ie/bullets) against the granting of the contract to any Israeli company, which saw the organisation and its supporters lobbied the government, undertook a letter writing campaign and protested outside the Defence Minister Tony Killeen’s constituency office in Co. Commenting on David Cameron’s recent speech, Martin Óg Meehan of the Republican Network for Unity (RNU) said; “In a few sentences the Tory Leader has confirmed what so many of us have believed since its inception. The path to Irish unity does not exist on the pages of the Good Friday Agreement, in fact it is filled with myths and illusions foisted upon Republicans for 12 years. Those who voiced their concerns on this aspect alone have been the brunt of smear campaigns, intimidation and political policing. read full story / add a comment

We all remember the slogan's so well, 'Yes for Jobs and Investment', from the soldiers of misfortune, 'Yes it's that important' from the latte supping continental sophisticated lot, and even got exposed to a pair of melons and a tight pair of EU branded Speedos in a sexed up poster campaign from the blue shirts, all in promotion and pursuit of a yes vote for the Lisbon Treaty this time last year.

Yassamine Mather writes on how the sanctions against Iran have developed into Warfare. But in thiis case the Imperialist-Zionist attack consists of Cyber Warfare. Full text at link. While Israel, the US and Britain keep up their rhetoric of ultimatums and threats against Iran, and escalate the siege warfare of economic sanctions, Hands Off the People of Iran has been warning of the very real and ominous danger of a so-called pre-emptive attack. Now things have taken an unexpected and dangerous turn. Throughout the last couple of months Iran’s nuclear plants as well as a number of major industrial complexes have been targeted by a sophisticated piece of malware: Stuxnet. read full story / add a comment

Smithfield HORSE market in Dublin 7 is held on the first Sunday of every month. It has been held every month for almost 280 years. Last Sunday the scene there was akin to a scene from Mad Max the movie. A tiny foal was abandoned in a sad neglected condition, two punch ups broke out with crowds charging dangerously to get a closer look. A man was spotted carrying a sword and Sulkies and 4-wheeled carts were raced around the roads despite the best efforts by Gardai to stop this. The incidents of two wheeled carts being ridden with distressed horses and at immense speed around the city roads are increasing at an alarming rate. read full story / add a comment |
