Almost 210 years ago on the 23rd of May 1798 the largest popular republican rising in Irish history began. Across the island tens of thousands fought under the banner of the United Irishmen. Hundreds of thousands had been sworn into the organization in the preceding four years. On four occasions revolutionary France sent thousands of troops to aid the rebellion, the United Irishmen had built contacts with revolutionary republicans across the globe, including the USA, France, Hamburg and England.

The response of the British state to the rise of the United Irishmen was a brutal counterinsurgency campaign that stirred up sectarian conflict on the island. 1798 thus came to shape much of the political struggles that took place in the following centuries. read full story / add a comment

On Saturday 19 May, members of the Iraq Veterans Against The War (IVAW), including former Marine Sergeant Adam Kokesh, participated in a peace march and die-in coordinated by the Ansbach Peace Coalition.

This demo was just one in a series of demonstrations in the Ansbach week of action, which will culminate in a rally outside the gates of the US barracks in Ansbach-Katterbach on Thursday 24. Here, the patriotic American veterans will protest against an official military ceremony at which more than half of the 5,500 US troops stationed in Ansbach will receive their marching orders for the war in Iraq.

MICHAEL DAVITT: FREELANCE RADICAL AND FRONDEUR, by Laurence Marley will be launched at Charlie Byrne's bookshop in Galway at 6 pm. Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh will introduce the book

Michael Davitt (1846–1906) is popularly known as the founder of the Irish National Land League and as the architect of the agrarian campaign of 1879–82. However, while the Land War was pivotal in Irish history, Davitt’s lesser-known freelance political career after 1882, during which he engaged with a diverse range of issues and causes, from trade unionism, to the Boer War to Zionism, reveals a much more complex and, at times, contradictory political figure than that previously represented in Irish historiography.

This book, the first sustained study of Davitt’s political career in its totality, views him in a broad political context of labour activism and international radicalism. read full story / add a comment

As the wank of the Primetime party leader's debate recedes behind us and the main parties continue to slit each others throats each and every day in a pantomime scramble to the centre, these days it seems, finding even a morsel of inspiration in mainstream Irish politics is as hopeless as expecting coherence from Trevor Sergeant. Thankfully there is one man desperate to avoid the Primetime approach to politics. Ladies and gentlemen, enter Kilkenny's Captain Moonlight...

Construction was held up on Fri 18th on the controversial M3 in the Tara Valley by a peaceful demonstration. A small group of concerned active citizens congregated at Rath Lugh at 5:30am. When workers arrived at 6:10am, they were unable to get their vehicles on site and gathered on the N3. The workers seemed unaware that the carpark they were using is the newly closed archeological site at Roestown.

Syttende mai (May 17th) is celebrated by Norwegians in Dublin to mark the anniversary of the signing of the country’s first constitution, and independence from Sweden.

Of all the countries in the in the world, Norway has one of the highest standards of living. To a great extent, this is because of the country’s natural resources, which are carefully managed through the state company Statoil.

Statoil owns a chunk of the Corrib gas field and is working on getting more gas from under the sea off the west coast, so Ireland's natural resources are also playing their part in raising the living standards of the Norwegian people.

Once again this year, activists from Shell to Sea joined in the festivities, distributing flags and leaflets to the Norwegian people and raising awareness of the fact that the Irish establishment are not doing such a good job of looking after our natural resources. read full story / add a comment

Outraged but not surprised at, what amounts to a mainstream media/political parties cosy conspirancy not to make Ireland's aiding and abetting of the attack on Iraq an electoral issue, two anti-war activists, early today, took to Galway's streets to say our piece through paint brushes and the ad-busting of Ahern's election placards.
