Experts had warned for years that the M3 should never have been routed through the Gabhra (Tara-Skreen) Valley. What we refer to today as a “henge” are two related architectural forms that come from the late Neolithic and the early Bronze age. They date from about 2500 to 1800BC and may consist of banks, earth enclosures and also timber circles and that is what we have in this case. Rath Medb at is an example of the earthen enclosure. The best known henge is of course Stonehenge. read full story / add a comment ![]()

My family have shared a back fence with the Enoggera Army Barracks since the late 1950's. My older brother Sean and I were raised during the long years of the Vietnam War next to this second largest military base in Australia. My parents are still there, the base is still there, the rifle range is audible form our home, the lowflying military choppers occasionally pass over our house and young men and women in uniform fill the aisles of the local Brookside Shopping Centre. Sean and I have spent 30 years in anti-war activism that has taken us to resistance actions, court secenes and prison from New York, London, Texas, Roxby, Jabiluka, Nurrunga, Cunungra, Carbahla, Amberley, Pine Gap, Nevada Nuclear Test Site to Dublin's Four Courts but never before had we been drawn to the gates of nearby Enoggera. read full story / add a comment ![]()

I was reminded of last weeks Phoenix while listening to the Irish head of Transparency International on Morning Ireland's business news section this morning. He was angelically critiquing companies here who may, (be forced to...) slip their standards abroad. The Phoenix had an interesting article on this Irish Chapter of Transparency International (TI), on TI internationally, and on their links with the World Bank and curious unwillingness to demand Wolfowitz's resignation... (as it is not available online, I post this article in the public interest.) read full story / add a comment

Yet another example of Western thought coming into conflict with Eastern culture. In this case there is a solution which might allow the Hindus to keep their Sacred Bull and will also protect humans and other animals from infection. The Animal Health Act 2001 allows for ill animals to be treated rather than slaughtered in all cases. Ignorant officials are refusing to consider this. Full article at link. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Every year the Norwegian Community in Ireland organise a parade through the streets of Dublin to celebrate their national day. It's becoming traditional now for activists from the Shell to Sea campaign to join in, and point out how the government of Norway are doing a much better job of looking after the interests of their citizens than our representatives are looking after us. Through ownership of Statoil, the Norwegian people will own 25% of Corrib gas. The people of Ireland will gain nothing. read full story / add a comment ![]()

As an exercise in representative government the current General Election campaign is a shambles. Instead of a debate about the future direction of government we have the second round of a controversy that should never have had a first round. If Taoiseach Bertie Ahern had any questions to answer about his personal financial arrangements fifteen years ago, the place for him to do so was and is before the Mahon Tribunal. Instead we have a distracting witchhunt against a politician with a long, well regarded record of service to the state. read full story / add a comment

Today was the official opening of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission. The idea is to provide a civilian oversight of the Gardaí and provide a way for people to make complaints about the police without going through the Guards themselves. Unfortunately, only invited members of the corporate media were allowed into the opening, so this indymedia report is confined to the outside of the building. Amazingly, the Gardaí tried to stop me taking pictures on the pavement outside, and even tried to block the camera. Eventually after trying to interrogate me they stopped and sulked from a distance. I think they realised that they couldn't arrest me outside the GSOC offices on their opening day, but they were certainly considering it for a while... read full story / add a comment ![]()
