A biomedical scientist who called her Portuguese neighbour a "Spanish whore" during a row over a fire alarm was cautioned by police for a hate crime and struck off. No wonder the cops have no time to solve burglaries.

England's seaside towns, like Southport, are microcosms of the country at large, where the magnificent infrastructure has been neglected to the point of decay and we barbarians live amongst its ruins, says Joanna Gray.

When Ben Pile moved into a new house he got a nasty surprise. It had a prepayment meter that was about to run out of credit. Fixing this proved to be absurdly hard, which, presumably, is just what the green lobby wants.

I have a problem with many activists- those who go on about social justice such as socialists often ignore environmental issues, likewise Greens and environmentalists tend to think social justice issues aren't that important- they are after all usually middle class..... read full story / add a comment

This is an article from Human Rights Watch in which they condemn the televised confessions forced out of Iranian Dissidents. It is wrong for the US to torture those who yhey hold illegally and it is also wrong for the Iranian SState to torture "confessions" out of those they hold illegally. Full article at link.

The Iranian government should cancel the scheduled July 18 broadcast of the “confessions” of two detained Iranian-Americans, Human Rights Watch said today. Human Rights Watch expressed concern that Iranian authorities have used coercive means to compel Haleh Esfandiari and Kian Tajbakhsh to make statements that may be later used to incriminate them in court.

The authorities have held them in largely incommunicado detention for more than two months, preventing lawyers and family members from visiting them. They have only been permitted brief phone calls to family members. read full story / add a comment

Those who oppose the US wars of imperialism are probably quite cynical about the lies and distortions used to justify what they slaughter. Nevertheless, it is likely that a press release issued by the Campaign Against Sanctions and Military Intervention in Iran will shock even those who thought they had seen it all. read full story / add a comment

Some socialists would claim that Iran is goverened by a radical anti-Imperialist regime. However the way Iran treats asylum seekers shows that the Iranian government is just as racist as the US when it comes to immigration. The article below was written by a member of the Communist Party of Iran (MLM).

A campaign to kick out Afghan refugees in Iran is continuing unabated. Between late April and late June, the Islamic Republic of Iran rounded up more than 100,000 Afghans working in Iran and dumped them on the other side of the border.

An allegation of disgraceful behaviour has been made against a leading member of the English SWP. To clarify what actually occurred n indepebndent investigation will be required. Here is an extract of an article from the Weekly Worker, 12 July 2007.

This year’s Marxism was marred by a disgraceful physical assault by SWP national organiser Martin Smith. On July 7, the second full day of Marxism, Socialist Workers Party national organiser Martin Smith physically assaulted comrade Simon, a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain and the Tower Hamlets branch of Respect.
