Fidel Castro speaks about the continuing Imperialist aggression towards Iran and vividly illustrates the consequences of such an attack. Full text of transcript at link. The use of nuclear weapons in a new war would mean the end of humanity. This was candidly foreseen by scientist Albert Einstein who was able to measure their destructive capability to generate millions of degrees of heat, which would vaporize everything within a wide radius of action. This brilliant researcher had promoted the development of this weapon so that it would not become available to the genocidal Nazi regime. read full story / add a comment

French strikes continue. Strikes spread across the country on fourth day of nationwide protests over pension reforms. Three fuel storage depots have been reopened by riot police in France, as fears grow of a shortage at the pumps. Nine of the country’s 12 refineries have shut down due to strike action prompted by the government’s plans for pension reform. High school students have joined the pension protests for the first time this week. 360 high schools across the country were closed this morning due to protests by students. In Paris, one of them is in a critical condition after being hit in the face by a “flashball” – a device used by police for crowd control. Count Me Out , which had simplified the process for Catholics who wished to formally leave the Church, has suspended its service. This follows the Church’s modification of the Code of Canon Law in April this year which removed all references to the act of formal defection, the process used by those who wish to formally renounce their membership of the Church. read full story / add a comment

On Thursday, September 16th, Joe Gilmartin and Seamus O’Nualláin left Tipperary with a van full of aid to drive 5000 km to Gaza. Along with others from the north and the UK, they are part of the international VIva Palestina convoy of almost 200 vehicles, $3million of medical aid, and 400 people from 30 different countries, for the people of Gaza. Having crossed through France, Italy, Greece and Turkey, the latest news is that that the convoy is waiting in Latakia, Syria, to get a ferry to Egypt and then travel into Gaza. The Egyptian government is currently threatening not to allow them through. Here is the diary that Joe and Seamus have sent back. Up to 250 people took part in the 1% Network’s walking tour on Saturday last, October 9th. As people began to gather from as early as 12.30pm it was clear that large numbers were going to to take the opportunity to ‘see how the 1% live.’ The unusually warm weather and low-key Garda presence added to the almost festive atmosphere for this most unusual of political protests. read full story / add a comment

The two intrepid reporters approached the Dáil, hoping to have some serious questions answered, armed with a camera and a butt plug, just in case. A big lorry came and parked outside the Dail in an act of protest about toxic banks. Reporters were later to be seen spinning the story that it had tried to crash through the gates. Later still, politicians were defecating the same thing. We had enough. We produced the butt plug. The politicians seemed to like it. Not all of us are willing to take it in the arse for the banks. read full story / add a comment
