Aminatou Haidar is now three weeks drinking sugar-water at Lanzarote airport because her papers were stolen by Morocco. Last month in it's 22ND report, the Independent Monitoring Commission (IMC) alleged that Concerned Families Against Drugs (CFAD) were, 'a vigilante group who was responsible for a number of punishment shootings and pipe-bombings of suspected Drug Dealers' in the North Belfast area. Although, we were surprised and dismayed at these unfounded allegations, given that the IMC had not contacted CFAD before issuing its report. CFAD complained to the IMC through our legal representative and were subsequently invited to meet with the IMC today (8/12/09). read full story / add a comment ![]()

Yesterday, on Monday the 7th of December, Mr Robert Ševcik was in the Richmond Court to conclude a marathon hearing that had spilled into a second day. Mr. Ševcik an animal rights activist, was answering to four charges, ranging from threatening, insulting and abusive behaviour, under the Public Order Act, to failing to produce his passport upon demand, under the Immigration Act. All of these charges arose out of a protest at Barnado's Furriers on Grafton st. close to the Molly Malone statue, on the 18th of October, 2008. It was a case littered with perjury, a missing garda sergeant and a mysterious garda inspector. Nonetheless, at the end of the case, the judge accepted Mr Ševcik's evidence and he walked out of the court, with each and every charge dismissed. Pat Kenny's radio show has long been a platform for the most kookiest of deniers, and it is quite clear where his own views are on the subject. In fact, the only thing that appears to get him more, eh, heated, is somebody with the temerity to mention the use of progressive taxation! Particularly when as an alternative out of the current economic crisis... So, I thought he'd yet again play it somewhat cagey (as in hiding his bias against the overwhelming consensus) but clearly give Plimer an easy time of it, however, Kenny just let the mask slip very, very visibly. The 'debate' would be Kenny & Plimer vs Gibbons and 99.9% of the peer-reviewed science. Kenny treated Plimer with kid gloves and then called Gibbons an “apostle” for climate change. read full story / add a comment

After a lenghty wait, the DPP has finally recieved the report over the Terence Wheelock custody death from the Garda Ombudsman. The Wheelock family have been critical of the inordinate amount of time it has taken the ombudsman to finish the investigation, as the bulk of inquiries had already been finished late last year and have stated again that this case will go all the way to the European Court of Human Rights.. For the full article go to the Sunday Tibune website: http://www.tribune.ie/article/2009/dec/06/dpp-sent-repo...elock read full story / add a comment ![]()

A court has upheld the right of a private citizen to film gardaí. A judge found the person filming to acting lawfully and within his rights, and fined the two members of the Garda Siochána who assaulted him to prevent him filming to have acted illegally. They were given small fines, even though they pleaded not guilty and lied to the court about the nature of the assault. There is no law against filming anyone in a public place in Ireland, and that includes the police. If they don't want to be caught on camera doing something, then they shouldn't be doing it. Lastly, can you imagine what the sentence would be for a protester who grabbed a garda and assaulted him to stop him filming? read full story / add a comment ![]()

Chris Strafford reports on the 2009 HOPI Britain AGM. There is also a link to MIke McNairs keynote address to the conference. Vids will hopefully be available at a later stage. Hopi has always called for the building of strong links between the democratic and revolutionary movements in Iran, whilst others in the movement - the British Socialist Workers Party, George Galloway - previously attacked us for ‘trying to dictate to the movement in Iran’. Some had even accused us of playing into the hands of imperialism for daring to criticise the theocratic regime. The SWP leadership realised the way the wind was blowing and made a U-turn, coming out in favour of the millions of protestors who marched through the streets of Tehran and other cities (although SWP comrades on the leadership of the Stop the War Coalition continue to oppose Hopi’s affiliation). Galloway, however, has simply made himself look idiotic by defending not only the rigged elections and the subsequent repression, but also the Islamic republic itself. read full story / add a comment
