Today Saturday 3rd October, activists from the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign and the Irish Anti War Movement engaged in a leaflet blitz outside the Jervis Centre in Dublin. The campaigners were highlighting the presence of an Israeli stall in the Centre that is selling ‘beauty products’ from illegal Dead Sea settlement-colonies in the West Bank. read full story / add a comment

I am writing this article to draw attention to the fact that vegetable growers can no longer be sure that farmyard manure, (including horse manure), is safe to use. There have been huge problems since last year where contaminated manure has led to stunted and grossly deformed vegetables in thousands of gardens, allotments and farms across the UK and the US, and now Irish gardeners are starting to be affected too. Potatoes, tomatoes, peas, beans, carrots and salad vegetables are all vulnerable, and there have been reports of damage to onions, leeks, raspberries and even a newly-planted tree; though, worryingly, some vegetables such as courgettes appear unaffected when grown on the same contaminated manure. read full story / add a comment

12,000-15,000 people marched through Dublin yesterday (September 30th) to protest at big cuts this year to community resources and the threat of massive further cuts. The marchers are people living and working on the ground and they see the harm done, with worse to come. "People live in communities, not economies," read one of the thousands of placards. If there was a general theme running through the march, it was that people saw the Government as helping out ‘fatcats’ and developer friends at the expense of poor communities. The next big COMMUNITY march - bringing in people from all over Munster – is due to be held in Limerick on November 5th (fifth). Yassamine Mather writes on how the Iranian Regime uses threats from the imperialists to justify the oppression of Iranian workers, students and womens rights activists. Full story at url below. The dramatic statements by Obama, Brown and Sarkozy about Iran’s undisclosed nuclear enrichment plant, made on the first day of the G20 gathering in Pittsburgh, were clearly intended to prepare the world for a new conflict in the Middle East. But this is old news. US and UK secret services had known about it for at least 3 years - Israel and France also knew about it and delivered their finding to the International Atomic Energy Agency earlier this year. So what was the main purpose of the Obama-Sarkozy-Brown show on September 25? Could it be it was directed mainly to audiences in the US, UK and France, to convince them that, at a time of economic uncertainty, western leaders have to deal with a ‘major external threat’ posed by Iran’s nuclear development? read full story / add a comment

Taking advantage of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's appearance at the UN in New York, thousands of Iranians from all across North America and beyond held two days of spirited protests against this icon of hate for many millions of their countrymen. They included a wide range of people, including many veterans of the 1979 revolution driven into exile, and U.S. and Canadian-born youth of Iranian descent awakening – and sometimes reawakening their elders – to political life. They also represented a broad range of political opinion, with a strong showing of forces identifying with the pro-Islamic Republic "Green" reformist opposition of presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi, as well as revolutionaries, communists and many others against both the Islamic regime and U.S. imperialism. read full story / add a comment

All good children are now washed and asleep in their cots and ought have little idea how their parents & elders intend to vote tomorrow in Ireland's 2nd referendum to ratify the Lisbon Treaty. Theirs is not the duty nor the concern to weigh local political and national debate with the long term consequences of a potential post-Lisbon European Union. For the most part they will have noticed the plethora of posters and the volume of bilge wash which the Irish voters have seen and been brought through since immediately after they voted No! in the first Lisbon referendum and which has continued unrelentlessly as a tsunami until this last evening of reflection. read full story / add a comment
