On Wednesday the 14th of September, concerned individuals wishing to support Teresa Treacy arrived at Clonmore, Tullamore. The following morning the supporters learned that no tree felling would be carried out that week and ESB workers had been instructed to leave the site. On the morning of Saturday the 17th of September, Teresa rang from the prison to say that her spirits had been lifted by the news. She has her own cell in the prison thanks to the good graces of the prison staff. After her initial shock she is settling in. She said she has no intention of 'purging her contempt' and is calling out for support. read full story / add a comment

Iran hangs men for having gay sex. Confirmed by the Iranian news agency ISNA Iran. Full story at Three Iranian men have been executed after being found guilty of charges related to homosexuality, according to a semi-official news agency. The men, only identified by their initials, were hanged on Sunday in the south-western city of Ahvaz, the capital of Iran's Khuzestan province. "The three convicts were sentenced to death based on the articles 108 and 110 of Iran's Islamic penal code, for acts against the sharia law and bad deeds," the Isna agency quoted a judiciary official in Khuzestan as saying. Iran Human Rights, an independent NGO based in Norway, said the men were charged with "lavat" – sexual intercourse between two men. It is not clear whether the three men were homosexuals or merely smeared with homosexualityaccused of being gay. read full story / add a comment

The world is only just beginning to realise the international consequences of the Arab awakening. Of course, Israel was the first to express concerns in the first days of the protests against president Hosni Mubarak in Egypt. It joined Saudi Arabia in warning the Obama administration that Mubarak’s downfall would endanger the ‘peace process’ with the Palestinians. Events in the last few weeks have proved them both right. First came the deterioration of Israeli-Turkish relations. For decades Turkey has been the single most important economic partner of the Zionist state. However, relations between this key Nato ally and Israel broke down after Israel refused to apologise for its deadly 2010 raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla that resulted in the death of eight Turks and a Turkish-American. In response, Turkey expelled several senior Israeli diplomats, suspended military cooperation and boosted naval patrols in the eastern Mediterranean. read full story / add a comment

The AFAR group has been contacted by various people expressing their disgust at the prospect of an animal abusing event in Galway. Are Donkey derbys not a relic of bygone days? This is the front page of the CURRENT Galway Independent. As part of a forthcoming "comedy" festival, radio presenter (Hector OhEochagáin) is publicising a Donkey Derby. AFAR is totally opposed to cruel spectacles especially in light of the increasing number of horse and equine cases that have come to light.animal violations are increasing at an alarming rate as any one will confirm who is involved in animal protection. Civilian passenger numbers are still falling at Shannon airport which is now downgraded to Ireland's third airport after Dublin and Cork. Yet, there were four US troop carrying aircraft at Shannon at 9.30 am today Sept 15, and probably several more during this 24 hour period. These four planes carry at least a total of 1,000 armed troops and perhaps up to 1,200.
