A series of features examining the background to the creation and development of mutant space.ie, an alternative Irish arts resource. The resource is set up to function as a co-op that works on the gift economy principle. In other words rather than use money in exchange for resources members use their own skills and resources as an alternative form of economic exchange.
Mutant space is open to everybody and anybody and does not differentiate between the artist and non-artist, professional or amateur, it is about supporting people who have ideas but not the resources to realise them read full story / add a comment

A campaign to save Brú na Bóinne from the Slane Bypass has been launched online over the weekend. It is being initiated by members of the National Monuments Forum, which includes Professor George Eogan, Professor Emeritus of Archaeology at University College Dublin. The National Roads Authority has chosen the most damaging route for archaeology and heritage, and Meath County Council has gone ahead and issued CPO orders for the route, without even waiting for the An Bord Pleanala oral hearing. A petition will be launched shortly, calling on Minister Gormley to deliver on his promise of a new National Monuments Act, and calling on UNESCO to place

As unrest continues in Iran, Yassamine Mather writes on the divisions within the ruling Theocracy and how the "Reformists" fear that that the revolt will result in genuine revolution. Full text at link.

More than two weeks after the demonstrations of December 27 2009, the political repercussions of these events, and the reaction to the anger and radicalism of the protesters, continue. Clearly now no-one, from the government to the ‘reformists’, to the revolutionary opposition, has any doubt that the current protests are no longer about who should be the ‘president’ of the Islamic Republic, but represent a serious challenge to the very existence of the religious state. read full story / add a comment

After he allegations that he had been having an extra marital affair with Waterford PR executive Monica Leech, Martin Cullen said some of his colleagues did not want to be associated with him. The former Progressive Democrat and current Fianna Fáil TD claimed that that his children had been subject to bullying and

He said he had felt like running down Kildare Street shouting: 'I am innocent. I am innocent'. He described the experience as being like 'waking up every day and being raped'.

Monica Leech received a payment of 1.9 million euro from a newspaper in libel damages after remarks made on RTE about her relationship with Cullen were repeated in print. RTE settled with her for a payment of €250,000. The Minister lodged proceedings separately but has not yet acted on them. By contrast, the average payment from the redress board (which was to compensate people for, in some cases, literally being raped every day) was €60,000. read full story / add a comment
