Pat Rabbitte is the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources has walked away with a pension more than those working 30 years could save up for.. 4 years service in the dail,means pat rabbitte of labour will walk away with a staggering 150 k pension per year,at a low 5% rate of tax,and he had the cheek to call us freeloaders when it came to the television license. This man gets a whopping 150k a year -for a measly 4 years service in the dail,which begs the question how many other ministers are availing of overblown pensions like these and under what wafer thin conditions? If we are to talk about people taking cuts,surley ministers pensions should be also laid out on the table,like nurses pay,teachers pay and garda pay and those on the state pension and welfare. ... read full story / add a comment

Last Sunday, we gathered at Giuseppe Conlon venue, as the sentencing phase for Bradley continues at NSA HQ, Ft. Meade, Maryland, USA. We named our venue after Giuseppe Conlon who left his native Belfast for London as “an act of mercy” to visit his son Gerry who had been fitted up, tortured and jailed. A similar fate was to meet Giuseppe and his in-laws the Maguires who offered him for a bed for the night. Giuseppe was to die in a British jail framed, libelled, tortured. Not even in death was he left alone as his body was flown back and forth over the Irish Sea and stashed at Hereford before eventually being laid to rest. Of the 21,000 Basques arrested since 1960, 10,000 have been tortured, according to a Basque historical memory organisation in a recent statement. At the counter-demonstration to Youth Defence's "Rally for Life" march, I was manhandled and arrested for no reason by plain clothes police. In the van, I was pepper sprayed several times while handcuffed behind my back and pinned to the ground. I was kept in a cell for about two hours before being released without charge. This week has seen large numbers of people continually walking down to Shell's tunneling compound, disrupting work and blocking Shell traffic, and many people from the camp have taken advantage of the sunny weather to spend the days helping locals with turf collecting- many hands make light work! The government of Greece has condemned "inefficiency, opacity and scandal", suspending its (profitable but critical) state broadcaster. ERT (Hellenic Radio-Television) is the state-funded national broadcaster in Greece. The Greek government summarily suspended ERT with immediate effect last night, suspending all 2,500 employees (and an additional 250 freelancers) without pay. ERT buildings have been occupied by the former state employees who are continuing to produce programmes for broadcast, which are being released through internet feeds and some Spanish television stations. On our way home we needed to cross a street on which there were some police. We approached them very carefully making it clear that we were not protesters. As soon as they saw us they grabbed us very forcefully and pushed us against a wall. We explained who we were and what we were trying to do but they proceeded to treat us very badly. My student - a Turkish citizen - was pushed on the ground and beaten around his stomach and buttocks with batons. They then told him they were not interested in him and kicked him to the other side of the street where he was able to escape. However, they held my friend, a Canadian national with Chinese origins, and myself. I was initially pushed to the ground and beaten very severely around the legs for ' what I was doing'. We were then marched around the centre of Izmir for a further 2 hours as the police decided what to do with us - constantly pushing us and harassing us - along with a number of Turkish people that they had taken into custody. Eventually we got away by being friendly to one police officer who suddenly said ' just disappear up this street'. At that stage the police (including very ferocious riot police who had orıginaly detained and beaten us) were escorting probably over a hundred Turkish citizens to some unknown destination. ... read full story / add a comment
