While European Commission President José Manuel Barroso is concerned that the Lisbon Treaty has fallen hostage to "domestic problems" in the Czech Republic, humanist Jan Tamáš spoke at the recent NATO counter-summit to outline the NATO-related defence issues that undermined the government. The Irish budget deficit has rapidly grown to an enormous size. The growing budget deficit is a symptom of the deepening global economic crisis. It is not the cause of it. The crisis can only be solved by eliminating its cause --capitalism. read full story / add a comment

The Lisbon Treaty was rejected by Irish voters last year, amidst the backdrop of an inept Government, a No campaign run by vested interests and a general level of ignorance as regards content of the Treaty. These are the reasons why we should vote Yes, why we shouldn't trust No campaigners and how the Lisbon Treaty is our ticket to a more transparent and democratic Europe, with Ireland at the centre of a stronger EU. read full story / add a comment

The system of economics which we have lived by for well over a decade has given us the many benefits of a booming economy- higher wages, a better standard of living, and an overall sense of happiness and well being. But what of those left behind? What of the multi-national companies, and profit driven banks, who take full advantage of the elitist and greedy philosophy of this system driven totally by profit? On Ocean FM's 'Paddy Clancy' show, (Saturday 11/04/09) , the Tánaiste informed listeners how everyone knows that shoppers are only going across the border for cheap booze. Appearently the €800million in vat revenues lost to cross border shopping is as a result of the legions of Irish people searching out bargain booze in the north of Ireland. read full story / add a comment

The workforce in Ireland willingly accepted twelve years of wage slavery when the goodies compensated for the grind, and the illusion of perpetual growth became the powerful myth underpinning the new consumer religion. Irish workers will bail out the bankers and the speculators following a decisive emergency budget. All workers will have reduced spending power as a result of tax increases while a new agency has been established to buy up “bad assets” with Government bonds. The income levy introduced in September has been doubled as has the health levy and minimum wage workers have been brought into the income tax system. Take home pay will be reduced for all workers in May. The deficit between Government income and expenditure is massive due to the bursting of the property bubble, banking mismanagement and the policy of positioning the country as the most “open” economy in Europe. That policy ensured that Ireland would be the most vulnerable to fluctuations in the globalised economy. Government borrowing will be over 10% of national income this year, but the main source of income to fix the problem is the increase in direct personal taxation. read full story / add a comment

This is a copy of a letter that I sent a few days ago to the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Mr. Eamon Ryan. This letter was copied to all TD's, Senators and MEP's. The response I received from Mr. Ryan's office was that "the Minister of State, Mr Seán Power, T.D., has responsibility for this area." read full story / add a comment

(Henry McDonald is Ireland Correspondent for the Guardian newspaper) Having worked as a journalist and film maker for BBC Northern Ireland’s investigative programme Spotlight in the late 1980s through to 1994, and having also written a book about collusion between the British intelligence services and loyalist paramilitaries, I have had occasion to read a good many books about the most recent round of the Irish Troubles. Even the poorest of these books has had some redeeming quality, some insight, which for me, as an informed reader, provided a new understanding of some aspect of the Troubles. Writer/Filmmaker based in Dublin seeks to interview individuals who have been indirectly or directly affected by aggravated assault or street crime. According to Garda figures there were 3800 incidents of this nature last year in Dublin alone. The aim of this project is to more fully understand the residual effects of post traumatic stress arising from unwarranted assault. In doing so it is hoped to investigate the healing process and resilience of the victim through shared experience. Interviews will be carried out with absolute discretion to the sensitivity of the subject and at the convenience of those willing to take part. read full story / add a comment

RTE Radio 1 had both Richard Boyd Barrett (People Before Profit) and Eamonn McCann (journalist and broadcaster) as contributors on the Spirit Moves programme with Myles Dungan on March 29th. Neither Boyd Barrett nor McCann declared their membership of the SWP (no surprise there). However the most disgraceful aspect of their contribution was the opening comments by Boyd Barrett who attacked the recent Lyndsey strike in Britain as 'racist' . read full story / add a comment |
