Just a few thoughts on the banking crisis and its effects on the currency markets and the real economy. It seems to this observer that you can divide this crisis into three parts, or dominos, with one already falling and threatening to knock over the other two: read full story / add a comment

On the afternoon of Friday, November 22, 1963, the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, was shot and killed by a sniper as he rode in a motorcade through the streets of Dallas, Texas. That infamous weekend was the beginning of 24 hour saturation television news coverage, the moment when the post-war generation of baby boomers received their first initiation of the brutal underbelly beneath the American dream, it was the beginning of the political drama of the 1960’s that almost tore the US apart as the lid was lifted on America’s unease with its superpower status, the divide between rich and poor and the cancer of racial injustice. It is a drama that is unresolved and still poisons American society today. As a new young energetic African-American President appears to have the White House within his reach, it appears there is a chance that the festering wound opened in 1963 may finally be closed. Or maybe not. read full story / add a comment

I began these writings on Catholicism in response to Ciaron O’Reilly’s request that I review Harry Browne’s Hammered by the Irish. I have never met Harry but I am a long time friend of Ciaron O’Reilly one of the defendants in the series of trials that followed the Catholic Worker /Ploughshare Activists’ attack on an American War plane that was stationed in a hangar at Shannon Airport in clear violation of Irish neutrality. read full story / add a comment

Now the Bush regime has taken a stake in the top nine US banks. It does so to save the system which the Wall Street Journal says was on the edge of a precipice. This is a major defeat for the US model of capitalism. And for the Bush regime. Bush came to power promising to reverse the gains of the 1930's and the 1960's. Now he will leave power having gone back to again increasing the role of the state in the economy. Not to mention the military defeats abroad. read full story / add a comment

What is 42 day detention? 42 day detention is part of the new counter terrorism bill that the British government is trying to pass. The bill successfully made it’s way through the House of Commons thanks to the last minute help of the Democratic Unionists. We do not know what the Democratic Unionists were offered in return for their votes but it has been suggested that honours and titles may have been on the shopping list. The bill aims to extend the amount of time that a terrorist suspect can be held without charge from 28 days to 42 days. The bill needs to pass through the House of Lords before it becomes law. To date it has received its first and second reading and is to go through it’s review stage this week. read full story / add a comment

It is everywhere. The talk of the bail out. And now the talk of the extra $140 billion they bribed the politicians to pass it. Meanwhile tens of millions of American workers are watching their savings, pensions, homes and jobs vanish before their eyes. The anger about the bail out prevented it being passed the first time. There has been a fundamental shift in consciousness in the US working class. It will not go back to having the same trust in the Republicans and the Democrats and the system. However a much greater shift could have taken place if the union leaders instead of trailing with their heads down after the Democrats and the bail out had taken an independent stand. read full story / add a comment

Very little by the look of it... The services in Kerry General are pathetic. The staffing levels are completely inadequate and its embarrassing to see the lack of dignity on show sometimes. Virtually all departments are completely under staffed and cant deliver the basics. It appears that budgets are more important than patients in this establishment. So much so that, staffing levels are more weighted towards the drugs invoices than the drugs themselves. read full story / add a comment

The entire media seems to be singing in unison on one of the biggest potential movements of public funds into private hands. And it looks like they might get away with it too. surely there's a better way? Here's one suggestion I came up with in all of 5 minutes to get the ball rolling. In a period of mass unemployment in 1920's Germany fascism came to power despite not only the presence of mass Communist and Social Democratic parties but also of significant anti-fascist street fighting. Why did the left fail and what was the attraction of fascism. What about fascist movements today, do they represent a similar threat? Can we even agree a single definition of what fascism is? read full story / add a comment

While many view these days with dread; the outset of climate crisis, political corruption and corporate manipulation blocking healthy change, lack of hope that things can change. Others are starting to see something profound emerging; a re-awakening, an eruption of activity, new and intelligent ways of human interaction. Ecologist Paul Hawken sees this phenoman as "the immune system of humanity finally kicking in" and calls it Blessed Unrest. As another bubble in all this, yesterday saw the first of 25 days of the first "Global Eco Forum"... read full story / add a comment |
