Some things in life are pretty obvious. One is that you don’t attack a heavily armed gang that outnumbers you 30 to 1. So what was Georgian leadership thinking when it ordered an attack on South Ossetia? There can be no question that they thought they would be able to defeat Russia. CEARTAIS held a successful seminar on August 26th in the Felon's Club on the Andersontown Road in Belfast. The conference was well attended by dozens of former Long Kesh Prisoners and relatives. Who were shown new photos of the battle and brutality that took place on October 16th, 1974. They were also given a comprehensive update of our Campaign and how we intend proceeding in the future. Our Committee would like to thank the Felon's, Coiste Na Iarchimi, Tar Isteach, The Andersontown News and everyone who attended our first Seminar. read full story / add a comment

Have a look at these two short videos from youtube. They show very similar instances - in the first one a police officer in New York City (Officer Patrick Pogan) assaults a protester at a critical mass bike ride, and in the second a member of the Garda Siochána (Garda Kevin O'Connor) assaults a protester at an anti-Shell protest in Mayo. The EU 'presidents' and prime ministers keep betraying the 490 million people in the 27 EU countries. To avoid another defeat, the managers of the EU decided not to hold any referenda at all, but the referendum in Ireland could not be avoided. My wife was pregnant with twins this time last year and it got me thinking about Avril Monaghan, the woman who died, pregnant with twins, in the Omagh bombing. This is a short piece that I wrote at the time, remembering that tragic day in general, and those hugely unfortunate twins in particular. The US puppet regime in Georgia thought it could retake S. Ossetia and Abkhazia. It underestimated the revival of Russian power. Now its US and Israeli military has been crushed and the regime is in tatters. This represents a change in world relations. Russia has now shown it is prepared to intervene militarily beyond its borders. This will mean that the russian minorities in the former Soviet republics will become much more assertive. this in turn will mean that the governments of these countries will have to pay more heed to Russia. And the sige of Bush only able to wring his hands in china while his boy was getting whipped in Georgia will strengthen all Anti uS forces worldwide. read full story / add a comment

Minister Martin Cullen padding around in his first class pajamas on his first class flight to China has vanished, replaced by: "Cabinet opposed to across-the-board pay rises By RONALD QUINLAN ACROSS-the-board pay rises look like an increasingly unlikely outcome from the national pay talks as the Government attempts to rein in inflation and protect employment as the economic downturn continues." read full story / add a comment

Michael Casey, a former chief economist today wrote an article in 'The Irish Times' entitled "Killing the myth that Ireland's wealth has poisoned its values" in which he attempting to dispel the 'myth' that wealth has poisoned Irish peoples values. In response, he is most certainly correct in believing that wealth cannot 'determine' a societies derision of values, but neglects to paint a clearer understanding of how wealth and values converge. In response, it could be argued that wealth opens the door to new 'negative' value thinking as it can close the door to others. Furthermore, as I will show, some of his own comments in the article require further careful consideration. read full story / add a comment

Amidst the fog of war, and lack of media on the ground, it's anybody's guess as to what is actually going on there at the minute. It is claimed that Russian aircraft attacked military and other targets in Georgia (Russia denies any such attacks happened, and Georgia claims to have shot down some of the aircraft) and a large number of Russian tanks has crossed the border.
