We still haven't learnt the lessons from the Grenfell fire, says Margaret Rothwell. To stop it happening again, we need intelligent alarms, second staircases, firemen's lifts and the retrofitting of sprinklers.

Ramzy Baroud is the editor of PalestineChronicle.com and author of My Father Was a Freedom Fighter: Gaza's Untold Story (Pluto Press, London). Here he writes of Syria and US attempts to interfere in the country's future. But he says: United States involvement in Syria is the second-greatest danger facing the Syria uprising (the first being the cruelty of the regime).

United States ambassador to Syria Robert Ford is quite a feisty diplomat. He shows up unannounced and uninvited at various hot spots in the country, greeted with varying degrees of enthusiasm and, oftentimes, anger. When he made a highly touted appearance in the city of Hama in July, residents reportedly greeted him with flowers. However, his appearance at the home of an opposition figure in Damascus on September 29 earned him a salvo of tomatoes and rocks from angry protesters. read full story / add a comment

Sirte has become the Guernica of the 21st century. The bombing it has been subjected to surpasses Gaza and even Fallujah for its criminal targeting of civilian homes, hospitals, utilities such as water, gas and oil, etc. And yet, while the people of Sirte face extermination by gangs who have already lynched and ethnically cleansed thousands of Black people, the Irish Left maintains a cold silence towards this agony. Recently in the picturesque village of Ballynagore, Co Westmeath, the local Council at a cost of €40,000 took the decision to demolish 3 bungalows that where close to being fully constructed, in what is now purported to be the demolition of Ireland's first 'ghost estate.'

The 3 bungalows had been left lying idle for quite some time and while there is confusion as to who the developer is, the neglected homes had quickly fallen victim to vandalism and had become somewhat of an eyesore to the residents of Ballynagore. read full story / add a comment

One of the main criticisms of the status quo in Iran is the relegation of women to second-class citizens, something which had been explored by Iranian filmmakers repeatedly in the previous years. Many of these filmmakers were involved in the Green Wave, and this season attempts to select work which represents both these artists and their concerns on the rights of women in contemporary Iran. As the regime cracked down on protesters, the punishments imposed on many of the names mentioned in these notes make for chilling reading: Pegah Ahangarani and Mahnaz Mohammadi, repeatedly arrested and imprisoned, currently on release; Mohammad Rasoulof, imprisoned for six years; and most cruelly, Jafar Panahi, imprisoned for six years, and prohibited from filmmaking for 20. read full story / add a comment
